Life Drawing

      Life drawing, the study, drawing and painting of the male and female nude, has been a bedrock of training for artists and art students for centuries. There is no adequate substitute for working with live models, but time, opportunity and cost can be obstacles for those seriously interested in this area of training and recreation. The aim of the present website is to provide free access to a variety of images that can be used for life drawing practice, notwithstanding the fact that it can only be a substitute for regular sessions with live models, which is of course the most rewarding way to work.

      Many of the images are of the whole body. As well as concentrating on the drawing of various components of the human form, which is a challenge in itself, it is important to relate the parts to the whole, creating an accurate and satisfying composition. Some of the images focus on smaller areas of the body, and these also provide useful exercises.

      Unlike the fashion and magazine industry, the only criteria for life modelling are the ability to hold poses for reasonable lengths of time, provide a variety of interesting poses, and be unconcerned about body image issues. If the model is a human being, of whatever age and type, that is all that matters. It is also totally non-sexy. And if a model feels nervous or self-conscious, this is not the job for them.
